Independent Travel Training (ITT)

Independent Travel Training (ITT) is for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) who are currently being supported by our SEND Travel Support Service.

It teaches them how to travel safely on public transport by themselves. This can help them get to and from school, college, or their workplace. They will be taught how to:

  • leave the house and safely walk to a bus stop
  • cross a road safely
  • read road signs
  • keep themselves safe travelling on public transport
  • respectfully interact with others
  • be aware of their surroundings and stay safe around strangers
  • cope in an emergency or when something goes wrong (cancelled buses, bus break downs, missed stops)

Only those who are currently receiving support from our SEND Travel Support Service can apply for ITT.

What are the benefits of ITT?

There are many benefits. ITT can help:

  • build confidence
  • improve social and communication skills
  • develop life skills
  • promote good health and wellbeing
  • young people become more independent
  • increase access to education, employment and training opportunities
  • increase access to health services as well as social and leisure activities

Who delivers the training?

The training is delivered by a dedicated travel trainer. They will have experience working with young people who have different needs. Family and education staff will also be involved.

How long does the training last?

There is no timescale for the training. The trainer will work at a suitable pace based on needs.

After successfully completing the training, the child or young person can be signed off as an independent traveller. They must show they are confident and capable for this to happen.
