Feeding your baby

The “Proper Geordie Scran” campaign is a local initiative launched earlier this year, working closely with young parents to promote breastfeeding and normalise feeding in public spaces. Using the friendly phrase “Give your bairn some proper Geordie scran,” the campaign connects with local culture and encourages parents to feel confident feeding their babies wherever they are. It aims to reduce stigma, raise awareness of the health benefits of breastfeeding, and create a supportive environment across Newcastle.

The campaign was introduced during World Breastfeeding Week and highlights that breastfeeding is welcome in all public venues across the city. Businesses and community spaces are encouraged to display “Breastfeeding Welcome” signs, signalling inclusivity and reassurance for parents. This approach not only supports mothers but also educates the wider community about the importance of acceptance and respect for infant feeding choices. Alongside awareness efforts, the campaign directs families to practical support. Parents can access health visitor appointments, infant feeding specialists, and local drop-in groups for advice and encouragement. Resources also include guidance for partners, tips for starting solids, and links to national helplines. By combining cultural pride with accessible services, “Proper Geordie Scran” helps families feel empowered and supported during the early stages of parenthood.

Dad Tips!

However your baby is being fed, you can get involved. If mum is breastfeeding, you can support her by bringing water, snacks, extra pillows or just keeping her company. When baby is fed, you can burp and settle baby, or maybe it's playtime. Did you know that because men play and interact differently, you're teaching your baby different skills.
