Initial Screening

What is the Initial Screening?

We always look to place children in the care of family members if possible.  If you want us to consider you, we will come out and interview you. 

This first interview is a quick check to see if you are suitable.  We must do this by law when a child is under our care. 

A social worker will visit you at your home.  They will check your house and garden are safe. 

They will want to know: 

  • Who lives with you.
  • Your link with the child.
  • Your experience with children.
  • Your health, work and money.
  • How you would keep the child safe.
  • What support you have from family and friends.
  • If there are any pets in the home.

You will be asked to:

  • Fill out an application form.
  • Fill out a DBS form. (All adults in the house must do one).
  • Arrange a medical with your GP.
  • Give us the names of 4 people who know you (references).

What happens next?

We will write a short report on our findings and give you a copy. 

If we think you are suitable we will arrange more meetings.  We need to find out more about you. 

If we don't think you are suitable, we will tell you why.  We will tell you your options.
