What is kinship care?

Kinship care is where a child lives with a family member or someone else they already know. This may happen when they cannot live with their parents.

Kinship care is sometimes called connected care or family and friends’ care.

If you are providing a home for someone else's child, you could be a kinship carer.

There are different types of kinship care. Kinship care can be informal or formal:

Informal kinship care is arranged by the family.
Formal kinship care involves social workers and the family court.
